Can extended family write and submit obituary if immediate family chose not to?

Question by Jessica!: Can extended family write and submit obituary if immediate family chose not to? My immediate family chose not to submit an obituary for my brother who recently passed away. The reason to not submit was due to some personal beliefs. My cousin's family apparently doesn't agree with my immediate family's choice and is planning on writing the obituary and submitting it themselves. Are they allowed to do that when they aren't immediate family to my brother? Best answer:

Yes. And frankly, the "immediate family" (under these sort of circumstances) doesn't include YOU. It only includes the parents and/or your brother's wife and/or children. Now does it seem odd, or is it a bit unethical, for the extended family to choose to submit an obituary? Sure. Then again, it's not illegal and in many cases it would be deemed appropriate to make sure something is filed in place of an autopsy for legal purposes.
